What is nate Certification?
NATE stands for the North American Technician Excellence (NATE). NATE, founded in 1997, is the nation’s largest non-profit certification organization for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians. As a non-profit, NATE is owned by the HVAC industry as a whole. While NATE certification is not required by law, working exclusively with certified technicians provides a number of safeguards.
To ensure high professional standards throughout the industry, NATE created a certification program. To earn certification, technicians must pass a knowledge-based exam that covers a range of real-world information that qualified technicians should possess.
NATE certification is not awarded to entire companies. Instead, each technician must qualify for certification individually. This lets you know that every tech we send is trained and qualified for the job.
How does a technician earn certification?
NATE certification is a rigorous process that requires both practical experience and demonstration of HVAC knowledge. Before a technician is eligible to become certified, they must have at least one year of HVAC work experience. Only then are they permitted to test for certification.
The certification test itself helps demonstrate knowledge in a wide range of HVAC related areas. Technicians are tested on basic scientific, construction and electrical knowledge. They must demonstrate an understanding of safety protocols. They will also be quizzed on factors like the ways to achieve the ideal level of in-home comfort.
Technicians can choose to be certified in Service, Installation or both, as well as an array of specialty areas that include air conditioning installation and distribution, and oil and gas heating service. A technician who has five years of experience or more can also become a Senior Level Technician.
NATE certification must be periodically renewed to ensure that all technicians maintain and continue to develop their skills. Minimum continuing education requirements must be met at least every two years to maintain certification.
